Senior Technical Writer - Experienced (Aviation)


Pro Star Aviation, LLC is seeking a Senior Technical Writer to perform technical writing functions for a project to include, writing aviation related maintenance, parts, operator, and training technical manuals in order to create Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs) as well as printable Technical Manuals (TMs).


Job Type

The terms of this position are anticipated to span three (3) years with a possible five (5) year option.

Purpose & Scope

The Sr. Technical Writer will create new, update existing, and convert any legacy technical manuals and training support material per project-driven research findings. He/she will work with an integrated team of government, military and civilian aircraft technical experts and specialists in support of the project. Using engineering documentation, operator and maintenance manuals, logistics data, and direction from an integrated maintenance team, the Sr. Technical Writer will create, write, revise, standardize, edit, review, finalize and publish IETMs & TMs. The Sr. Technical Writer will prepare draft material for review by subject matter experts and final review by the customer. The Sr. Technical Writer will utilize specialized software and/or Microsoft Office products to generate required manuals. The Sr. Technical Writer must be flexible and have the ability to adapt to new information and programs. This position will be located in Londonderry, NH on Manchester-Boston Regional Airport (MHT) property and may require a DOD Security Clearance.

Supervisory Responsibility

  • The Senior Technical Writer reports to and works under the guidance of the Director of Special Missions and/or Program Manager

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Gather, prepare, design and coordinate the layout and organization of information and other documents/media for distribution
  • Work as a member on a team with engineers, military/government members, and aircraft technical experts
  • Develop and maintain a cohesive set of technical publications and manuals per project requirements
  • Utilize effective project management practices, including planning, scheduling, researching, and following-up, while using sound judgment to allow flexibility and change when and where appropriate
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with subject matter experts


Education / Experience

  • High School diploma/GED
  • B.S. degree (preferred)
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience as a Senior Technical Writer
  • Minimum of fifteen (15) years related experience as a Technical Writer
  • Experience with XML authoring is required
  • Experience authoring maintenance manuals related to technical manual development, delivery, and integrated logistics support (ARs, MIL STDs and MIL-PRFs, IETMs, DIDs, ATA, etc.)
  • U.S. military or civilian aviation organization maintenance background, preferred
  • Aviation Mechanical or Electronics ratings and/or background, preferred


  • MUST be a U.S. citizen
  • MUST be able to acquire a DoD Security Clearance - Secret
  • MUST be willing and able to pass a background and drug test
  • MUST have at least fifteen (15) years of experience writing technical documentation

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • MUST have the ability to read, write, speak and understand English
  • MUST be able to prepare draft materials for internal review by subject matter experts and final review by the customer
  • MUST have experience creating documentation methodology and framework
  • MUST be able to work independently with minimum supervision
  • MUST be able to work effectively and efficiently on a short timeline
  • MUST be team oriented and possess strong customer interfacing skills
  • MUST be flexible and have the ability to adapt to new information and programs
  • MUST write in a clear and concise manner
  • MUST have clear, concise and accurate communications skills, both verbal and written
  • MUST have knowledge of U.S. military or civilian organizational and/or intermediate level maintenance concepts
  • MUST have the ability to research, review, and understand technical information and engineering drawings
  • MUST be able to develop procedural information from technical documentation
  • MUST have extensive knowledge of IETM & TM development procedures using civilian ATA and DoD MIL-STDs used to develop product deliverables for maintenance manuals.
  • MUST have ability and skills to operate office equipment such as; personal computer, printer, copy machine, fax, telephone and other equipment including desk supplies and work related tools, as required.
  • MUST have great attention to detail, multi-tasking skills and excellent time-management skills


  • Regular attendance of scheduled hours is critical (anticipated Monday-Friday 8am-5pm EST)
  • Punctuality is necessary to meet deadlines
  • MUST exhibit flexibility of work hours to adjust to project timeline needs based on critical mission requirements
  • MUST be willing to travel (including air travel) periodically
  • MUST demonstrate professional behavior at all times when dealing with customers, managers and co-workers
  • MUST maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a professional manner
  • MUST be willing to work in both office and hangar settings
